Disease X Could Prove More Dangerous Than COVID-19, Potentially Claiming Over 500 Million Lives

According to a new book on the Disease X virus, in the coming years, a new pandemic may engulf us all, which could prove even more deadly than COVID-19. This disease is named Disease X because there is currently no information available about it. Experts believe that the countless viruses present on Earth could be responsible for it.

New Delhi, Lifestyle Desk:

Disease X – A new book written by vaccine experts is warning that the world is currently unprepared for the next global pandemic. According to the book, there are billions of viruses circulating on Earth, about which we have little knowledge. The authors of the book claim that just as the Spanish flu took many lives a decade ago, the next pandemic could claim the lives of over 500 million people.

Kate Bingham, former Chair of the UK Vaccine Task Force, and former journalist and political advisor Tim Hems, have co-authored a book titled “The Next Killer: How to Stop the Next Pandemic Before It Starts.” Disease X is mentioned in this book. A portion of the book has been published in the Daily Mail, where it is explained how viruses are the most abundant and diverse life forms on Earth, and how many of them pose a threat to humans.

They have revealed that scientists have identified 25 families of viruses, each containing hundreds or thousands of different viruses, any of which could potentially cause a pandemic.

They have also warned that viruses can jump from animals to humans and mutate rapidly, as seen in the cases of Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19.

How dangerous is Disease X?

Some time ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) also raised concerns about the possibility of the next pandemic, which was named Disease X. WHO had informed about Disease X in 2018, a year before the global spread of COVID-19. Disease X is included in WHO’s list of dangerous diseases, along with Ebola, SARS, and Zika.

According to WHO, Disease X could be the cause of a dangerous global pandemic, potentially resulting from infectious diseases about which we currently have no information. The diseases included in their list are those for which we have no treatment available at the moment. Some health experts believe that Disease X will be zoonotic, meaning it will originate from wildlife or domestic animals and then start infecting humans, similar to what happened with Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19.

What preparations need to be made for the next pandemic?

It is important to note that COVID-19 claimed the lives of nearly 2 million people worldwide, but the authors of the book suggest that a more dangerous pandemic could be on the horizon. They have pointed out that the mortality rate of Ebola is 67%, while that of bird flu is 60% and MERS is 34%. We cannot rely on luck to avoid future pandemics because the next one could be even deadlier.

To prepare for the next pandemic, research on vaccines and treatments is crucial. Additionally, strengthening healthcare systems and surveillance is necessary. While we cannot determine the exact date of the next pandemic, we can start preparations in advance to face it.
